Cupping & Gua Sha Aftercare

Aftercare Instructions - 24 hours following your treatment:

Cupping and gua sha are deeply restorative therapies that promote circulation, release stagnation, and support your body’s innate ability to heal. To maximize the benefits of your session, we recommend the following aftercare practices for the first 24 hours.

  1. Soreness

A common side effect of Cupping and Gua Sha is soreness. If this happens, a warm compress or gentle massage can help ease discomfort. Soreness should not be bothersome or impact your daily routine. If this happens let your practitioner know.

2. Bruising

Cupping and gua sha bring stagnant blood and toxins to the surface, which may result in visible marks ranging from light pink to deep purple. These are not bruises in the traditional sense but therapeutic signs of stagnation being released.

  • Marks typically fade within 1 to 10 days

  • Color may darken temporarily, especially overnight, before fading

  • The severity and duration of markings vary by individual and level of stagnation

3. Avoid Cold and Wind Exposure

Cold is constricting and it can cause your pores to snap shut and lead to more tension than you started with. For the first 24 hours, we recommend:

  • Avoiding cold showers or swimming

  • Staying away from direct air conditioning or fans

  • Dressing warmly, especially around the neck, back, and shoulders

If the temperature is below 65 degrees, keep the back of your neck covered with a scarf or hood.

4. Hydration

Cupping and gua sha stimulate lymphatic drainage and detoxification. Proper hydration supports this process and encourages smoother recovery.

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day

  • Choose warm or room-temperature beverages

  • Minimize caffeine, alcohol, and sugary drinks if possible

5. Nutrition

To support the body’s healing response, avoid heavy or greasy meals after treatment. Instead, choose foods that are nourishing and easy to digest.

  • Opt for warm, cooked meals such as soups, broths, or steamed vegetables

  • Avoid processed or overly rich foods that may tax digestion

  • Allow your energy to be directed toward healing, rather than digestion
